GPU Gone, Again?

Hello guys! Not so long ago I started having problems with my nvidia gtx280 GPU. I contacted PCspecialist asking if I was under manufacturers warranty, of which I was. It was sent off to Hong Kong (somewhere like that) and I had another one in placement of that one (never got told what the problem of the last one was, I will send an email today and ask)

However lately I've been having problems, unlike the last one where I used to crash in-game and get pink pixelations on my screen, this one starts up OK gets to the welcome loading windows screen, then the screen goes blank. My mouse seems to be un-responsive, and my keyboard too. I try re-plugging these back in with out any effect. Some times however before going to a black screen I get a type of green and purple pixel effect dotted around the screen in one rough area.

It can takes about 4 tries to get my PC back on track, and actually fully loaded and when that happens (so far) I have no problems. I appreciate it might be hard without a picture of the problem, so I will try and take a photo tonight of the pixelation.

Basically my question is does this sound typical of a GPU failure? Or could this quite simply be a more driver based problem? Or something else.

Thanks for any replys. :)

It depends, when it goes blank, can you ctrl + alt + del? is it a hard lock up where the machine doesnt respond to anything, even the caps lock light on your keyboard etc?

Indeed I believe it is this "hard lock" no lights on my keyboard work, and my mouse gives off a VERY dim light (It has a funky light ontop to adjust settings quickly, that also goes off)

The caps don't work. I will double check this tonight (as I'm at work and being naughty)

Very quick reply though, nice :p

This is either a faulty GPU (again) or a driver problem. Please try downloading the latest drivers from nvidia.com. If you already have the latest drivers, please try installing an older version of the drivers.

If the problem continues to occur please contact us on 0844 499 4000 with your order number for further support.

*crys* I think I've got the latest driver.....I shall check, and then try.... :'(

Say if I'm near or even OUT on my manufacturers warranty, do I get covered by the months I was waiting for a replacement? Also what is the typical Nvidia warranty period? I am praying it's driver based....but I've got a bad feeling.

Anyways thank you guys for the quick replys.

Here's my issue though, I have no warranty on my PC with PCspecialist :(

It's all via Nvidias manufacturer warranty.

Went on it today and it booted up fine first time.....strange, I am going to check and change my drivers today / tommorow if I can't get it sorted I guess I'll have to ring and ask for another RMA. :(

It's got a 700W power supply. It didn't make my mouse dim this time, and it made a stupid noise through the speakers.

OK so I've been thinking I might just get another GPU, not 100% made up my mind but I don't know, just looking into it.

Problem I've ran in to is I've no clue about my mother board and the GPU I want and if it will actually work. So I gathered I'd ask help from you experts :)

Can my ASUS® P6T DELUXE: DDR3, SATAII, 2 x PCI-e x16, 2 PCI, 1 x PCI-e x1 run an ATI 5850 GPU?

700W power supply so that parts covered, but everything else is leaving me a bit sceptical....here's the specs I need for the GPU to run

* PCI Express® based PC is required with one X16 lane graphics slot available on the motherboard
* 500 Watt or greater power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended (600 Watt and four 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)
* Certified power supplies are recommended. Refer to http://support.amd.com/us/certified/power-supplies/Pages/listing.aspx for a list of Certified products
* Minimum 1GB of system memory
* Installation software requires CD-ROM drive
* DVD playback requires DVD drive
* Blu-ray™ playback requires Blu-ray drive
* For an ATI CrossFireX™ system, a second ATI Radeon™ HD 5850 graphics card, an ATI CrossFireX Ready motherboard and one ATI CrossFireX Bridge Interconnect cable per graphics card (included) are required

Don't know what my mobo has on it lol :p

Here we go, I had it today again. Got a couple photos of it on my phone, this is the image it's displaying. That to me is a GPU failure I'm sure....or at least one on it's last legs.

Couldnt help noticing you have the same Monitor/TV as me.

I sometimes (very rarely) get something ismilar, at the start I would get a weird pinky thing going on with the welcome screen then it was fine.

Also occasionally, (happened yesterday) but only about 6 times in total..., the screen just blanks out and I can't do anything but a soft/hard reset.

We need to keep many watchful eyes on this, happened to me a further 2 times yesterday, then it calmed down again, getting just a tad worried now :(

Well unfortunatly matey, you'll find that if it's anything like mine it'll do that. Happen maybe 2 or 3 times in a day eventually, and then the next thing you know you can't get anything loaded.

Just preparing this to send it off, can't afford to buy a new GPU really. Now I can wait 3 months for another potentially faulty one to get sent back! fun fun :(

mmm that's the way with mass manufacturing :( However, there are many forum threads on the subject, so I hope one day something is done about it :p Im getting weird symbols occasionally too now, not promising. Let's hope your new GPU gets back to you speedily.
