Was just a regular SATA.
It wasn't supported by frame or screws (much as I tried to find a way to), and it was touching the cable leading from the MB to the USB drive, but not a lot.
So as a last resort I opened my laptop's base, removed an extra HDD I'd added in the empty socket next to the reader, turned it on and now the reader works fine. I wonder if there was a conflict between them, or whether it pushed against a cable and caused any sort of issues.
So while I am waiting to find out from PCS (I've updated them), a friend of mine suggested I make sure my memory card reader works - and it doesn't. I've inserted a card to no avail.
So it may be that it's broken, hardware wise, or I don't have the right driver?

I've done a full clean install with nothing plugged in from a USB device, and the problem still persists. I'll contact PCS through a ticket and link this thread to them.
