Remember that the GPU's in laptops may carry similar names to their desktop counterparts but will never measure up to them, they are cut down low power versions.

Ye most are soldered onto the mainboard, only a few laptops have MXM tech that allows swapping out GPUs to a LIMITED number of replacements and upgrades. That 5870 should last you a good while though :)

The best laptop graphics card currently available is the Geforce GTX 485m. It blows all other laptop graphics cards out of the water currently. Only way to beat it is to have other lesser cards in SLI or Crossfire :)

Unfortunately you only get the 485m in a laptop make by Clevo. Next best is the Radeon HD 6970m, followed by the Radeon HD 6950m. These are both new cards though so pretty rare still.

I have a single Radeon 5870 (in an Alienware mx17r2 - yes yes, I know, I'm an idiot - if only I'd done my research I could have saved so much money!) and it can pretty much handle games such as WOW and COD on max settings at playable FPS.
