I have an i7 2600k and want to OC it to around 4-4.5GHZ and keep it stable. The PSU i was thinking of getting was the CORSAIR 1000W PRO SERIES, but it says in the spec that I only need a max power of 782W, should I drop the HX1000 and get a CORSAIR 850W TX SERIES instead? If i do change i can get 16GB of ram instead of 8GB and get it to come out at pretty much the same price. Or should I just drop the PSU and keep the current RAM?

I know I an posting an awful lot of questions, but it is my first build and i don't want to mess it up in anyway.

Well since this is in the overclocking section having more RAM modules makes achieving a higher overclock more difficult so it would be better to stay with 8GB of RAM if you're wanting to reach 4.5Ghz. You will have a higher power efficiency under full load with the HX1000 but the TX850 is also a great choice if you want to save some money.

Will the higher watt PSU last a lot longer then if it is not under as much strain?

In theory, it's the same as most components.
Overclocked parts tend to have a shorter life span than a stock part, Purely due to the strain, heat etc it is under.

Also bear in mind the way you are talking sounds like you plan to by a machine then overclock it yourself. Be advised this will void the warranty on the CPU if it fails due to the overclock. As per this thread: http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?3284-Warranty-When-Overclocking!

So if you are unsure on overclocking or stable settings it might be worth waiting the lead time and get a pre-overclocked machine from PCS that is covered under warranty.

It is pre-overclocked, its the K series ^^ So will 850 make no difference to the 1000? I am still a bit confused as to which one to go for.

Just because it's a i7-2600k it doesn't mean it's pre overclocked. The "k" means that the multiplier is unlocked which helps make overclocking easier and more stable.

Yeah, but i thought it came with the pre-overclocked profiles on the "k" series? Still, what would you advise on the PSU?

Ok, for that spec I would say a minimum of the Corsair TX850 but ideally you should go for the Corsair HX1000.

Also with a setup like that it seems a shame to waste it on a 22" monitor. If your desk size permits and you have budget left may I suggest the monitor I have.. VERY VERY good and excellent colour.

Wouldn't be able to get that at £80 more, plus don't like too large screens... Requires me looking around the screen too much, as opposed to having it all there. If you get what i mean.

Hmm going to have to cut down somewhere so i can get the HX1000. I forgot to link the minimum wattage required for the build, they suggested 780W with a 20% allowance. Just in case that changes any of your guys views on the PSU.

the TX850 will be fine if you need to save pennies, but it will limit upgrade options a bit.

Was only planning on upgrading RAM really, hopefully if I do make any major upgrade the price of a high performance 1KW supply will have fallen.
