Okay, I built a PC and I'd really like to host my own Minecraft server on it for me and my friends. Will it be able to do this with minimal lag and allow me to play at the same time with Skype running?

An i5 would ideally be better but that will push you into about £650-£700
The ram use useful as you can dedicate 4gb to the Minecraft server, Can you push the budget at all?

I had some lag issues when running minecraft + server on the same machine. A dedicated, even quite weak machine worked far better as it meant the processor weren't trying to manage so many threads.

I have a laptop currently which can run a server and minecraft with no lag.... The screen has gone though - its about 3 years old in January too...

Going to need a keyboard, mouse and webcam too so gonna stretch the budget to £700 - this may vary based on how much I get for Christmas - I already have £400

Drop to 8GB of RAM and get a better case and GPU. You could also buy windows somewhere else, such as kinguin.

As for it running a server without lag that also depends on your internet speeds

Dont drop 16gb of ram because he's running a server off his PC which will need 2-5gb of ram and Minecraft could use the ram as well and if he plans to use mods then that will also use more ram
