New PC - keep getting D3D error device removed whilst gaming

Hi all,

Hope you are all keeping well. Especially with everything going on! Might anyone be able to help me with a problem I have?

Literally have a brand new PC from PC specialist, had it about a week. Have installed 2 games since I got it: IL2 Sturmovik and Insurgency Sandstorm. I get an error when either after 10 minutes, or sometimes after a couple of hours... Essentially, at some point I get this error. Consistently, every time the PC gets used to game on either of these 2 games (only ones installed atm), I get D3D error device removed and the game then crashes and closes.

PC is up to date, latest drivers. And again, I've literally just turned it on from new and installed these games.

Specs:
AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12 Core CPU
ASUS ROG STRIX X570-F Gaming
32gb Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO DDR4 3200mhz
5700XT 8GB
2TB Samsung 870 SSD
Corsair 850W
Asus soundcard

This is getting a little concerning as its so consistent! And brand new! Many thanks for any input or advice.

Did you order with windows or without?

I believe that's normally related to a graphics driver issue.

To answer both:

1. I ordered with windows 10. I literally just turned the PC on and created an account. Then started using it.

2. No. But After a few days of this I tried undervolting. I thought it had fixed it but it still happens. Can't tell when its going to happen. Sometimes over and over. Other times infrequently.

I will try what's mentioned in the steam post, thanks. Will let you know results!

Windows update it started automatically. So I let those all run. The GPU was up to date when I checked under AMD Radeon Software - but had the optional driver.

I've just done what the chap in the Steam post did and have done a complete wipe of the graphics drivers. Just reinstalled but have gone for the recommended driver rather than the newer optional one. Will see if its any better.

Thanks again, will update when I have a better idea of stability.

Cool, that would have been what I suggested, just uninstall the GPU driver with DDU, then install the latest stable.

Hi all - quick update. As previously mentioned I cleared off the old drivers and reinstalled the recommended drivers rather than the optional new ones. I've used the PC for 2 days since on some games, and have not had the error once! So it appears that its fixed, touch wood.

If I might ask another question however - the GPU fans on startup now wizz up briefly then come back down. I've undervolted in Wattman and adjusted the fan profile. Is this a side effect of the changed settings? It wasn't doing it before (also undervolted on previous drivers). If its normal or safe, so to speak, I'm all happy. I just was not sure if this was symptomatic of another issue I might have self created?

Many thanks!

I note that this all started with a new PC. We do know that stuff sometimes comes loose in transit, so it will be worth your time popping the graphics card out and reseating it fully, do the same with other PCIe cards and with your RAM cards. If you have any M.2 SSD drives then remove them too and reseat them fully. Check that all cable connectors are fully home, especially those going to the motherboard.

Personally I would also remove all undervolts and custom fan profiles, you really want everything at stock frequencies/voltages/ levels when you're troubleshooting issues like this. You can always re-establish your custom stuff once you know your system is stable. I'd even go so far as to pull the CMOS battery for a minute or so and reinsert it to fully reset the BIOS back to stock too.

I have reset everything with the GPU to stock. Just got another D3D error again. I don't know how to do that stuff above. Feel a bit uncomfortable fiddling with the PC.

Can anyone clarify if this is a stupid thought - I got AC Valhalla free with my CPU. I installed it but it crashed after a minute every time. Couldn't even get past the setup screen. Could this cause problems? A new program? I've installed it and redone DDU.

To clarify from that screenshot - on the 15th I installed Valhalla. And that's when problems started.

EDIT: That's when problems started again. For those who've skim read, apologies.

Hi again - I noticed that AC installed a C++ on the 15th. And that I have 3 C++ installed. Please see attached screenshots. Could this have done anything? I have 2 x86 C++

EDIT: Under installed programs its showing x64 as installed on the 15th

It's entirely possible the C++ is doing something wrong...as to the entries, having loads of those shouldn't make a difference (on my last system I think I had 10 C++ entries, might have been more..there were definitely loads)

The System reliability monitor is showing that there was a hardware error somewhere...combine that with the Radeon message and it points to the GPU.

I would definitely check that it is seated properly and securely and all connectors are fully pushed in. Here's a video which may be helpful in showing how to re-seat your graphics card:

One thing to note: in the video he removes a cover from the back to access the securing screws...sometimes there is no rear access and you remove them from the side but you will see when you open the case
Thanks very much I'll take a look. Interestingly I've done DDU and also set my PCIe to 3.0 (read about common 5700 xt problems) and it appears stable again.
