Need help building PC

Hello, I have a small request. I am quite new to the pc scene and have no idea what to get. I want a pc with which I can run my engineering programs such as MATLAB and AutoCAD or Solidworks, but also want a pc that will run games such as forza horizon 3 and Arma 3 in Ultra settings without any frame drops. Would it be possible for you to make me a build which would suit me?. I have a budget of upto 950£ and would greatly appreciate your help. Frame rates for games as reference would be great too!
Best regards and many thanks, Batu

Perhaps something along these lines:

Although for AutoCAD etc there might be an argument for trading in the SSD and reducing the GPU to a GTX 1060 3gb in order to afford the i7 6700.

As for frame rates, check this article for Forza: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/d...oes-it-take-to-run-forza-horizon-3-at-1080p60

Arma III is apparently quite demanding at the highest settings: http://www.ocaholic.co.uk/modules/smartsection/item.php?page=0&itemid=3957 (a GTX 1060 would perform around the level of a GTX 980 at 1080p)

So £950 may not buy you constant 60fps at all times on ultra.

Apologies for not replying to your previous post but I wanted to look into it more carefully before giving an answer. I was under the impression that the applications above used hyperthreading (hence my earlier comment about the i7 potentially being something to fit into the budget) but it seems that may well not be the case.

AutoCAD Release 14 itself is not a thread-safe application and not really a multithreaded application. For AutoCAD 2000 and later, releases do have some support for dual processors and hyperthreading, but no more than two cores will be utilized. https://knowledge.autodesk.com/supp...threading-or-multiprocessor-capabilities.html

AutoCAD only supports multi-core technology in specific areas of the product, including:
•2D regeneration
•MentalRay rendering
To fully benefit from multi-core processors, you need to use multi-threaded software; AutoCAD is predominantly a single-threaded application.
https://knowledge.autodesk.com/supp...t-for-multi-core-processors-with-AutoCAD.html

Virtual cores may modestly improve overall system performance, but they are likely to have little effect on the performance of MATLAB applications. Intel CPUs with hyper-threading give the appearance that a computer has twice as many cores than it actually has. When using a tool such as Windows Task Manager, MATLAB may appear to use only half of the CPU cores available on the computer, when in fact the "unused" half is actually the virtual cores created by hyper-threading.
https://uk.mathworks.com/products/matlab/choosing_hardware.html

Your workstation’s engine is its processor and you only have one chance to get it specified properly. Since the main SOLIDWORKS application is “lightly threaded” – meaning it runs mainly on a single processor core – spend your money on the fastest clock speed processor with the most ample cache you can afford. Using this logic, a quad-core desktop processor like the Intel® Xeon® E5-1650v3 (at 3.8 GHz Max Turbo Frequency with 15 MB cache) or Intel® Xeon® E3-1281v3 (at 4.1 GHz Max Turbo Frequency with 8 MB cache) or Intel® Core™ i7-4790 (at 4.0 GHz Max Turbo frequency with 8 MB cache ) or quad-core mobile processor like the Intel® 4th Generation Core™ i7-4790MX (at 4.0 GHz Max Turbo Frequency with 8 MB cache) are a great choices for many SOLIDWORKS users. Of course in cases where the software is run concurrently with analysis and rendering software, it can make sense to move to more than four cores, but you’ll still want the highest speed and cache size you can afford. http://blogs.solidworks.com/solidwo...-solidworks-2016-workstation-performance.html

This page compares the specs of the CPUs: http://ark.intel.com/compare/88188,88196
Leaving aside the hyperthreading the i7 6700 is a little faster than the i5 6600, so would outperform it a bit in single-threaded applications, and it does have a larger cache. But given the ~£100 increase it might not really be worth it.

This build contains everything including from the monitor till an xbox controller. I just wanted to ask for your opinion, as looking by your replies this would sufficiently run my engineering programms, as well as the games from today, but would it also be functional in the future? I will be running games on 1080p(monitor resolution) and i think i should get decent fps. However im just not sure about the psu.And lastly are all components compatibile? As in if the psu is sufficient or there are enough fans. Appreciate your help!

Finan opinions before purchase?

I have put together this build and wanted to hear your opinions before I purchase it. My absolute limit for the pc was 1,400£ with the monitor and everything extra included. I have created this setup to be able to use for my engineering software like matlab, autocad and solidworks and thanks to the forum i know that this build will easily run it. I also want this pc build to last me a couple of years to play games like arma 3 and forza horizon 3 on high/ultra settings at 1080p(monitor resolution). I wanted to ask if this build will allow me to do all of that? Or if I can get a better buck for performance build thanks for the help! One thing im not sure about is the psu.

Am replying here as I avoid giving build advice in PMs - that way if I give bad advice someone who knows better can correct what I say.

Hey man thanks a lot for all your help! After looking at all of your comment I decided yo go with this build. I thought if I increase the budget I can also use the pc for longer(couple of years). With the build my engineering programms should run without flaws i am guessing. The game would probably run pretty decently at 1080p (monitor resolution).

Do you think this system is good to last me a couple of years in my engineering work and gaming industry? Also have I put the best buck to performance into this pc?? Would appreciate last bits of help. Also im not sure about the psu. Hope to hear from you!
It looks like a fair spec to me.

In terms of bang for buck, as I mentioned in my post above the i5 6600 is cheaper than the i7 6700 by £100 and will give almost the same performance. So the i5 6600 is better bang-for-buck, but the i7 6700 will perform a little bit better.

You could save £10 and go with the Titan cooler, and save another £15 and ditch the extra case fan as the Titan cooler and default case fans are sufficient.

Just one last questions, would this build last me 5-6years?? The answer for this will make me ourchase it. And thank you so much for all your help!

I don't work for PCS, nor do I personally know anyone who does, so I have no vested interest in whether you do buy or not :)

For gaming you will probably want to upgrade the GPU every few years. But that's not a weakness of the GTX 1060, that's just gaming. It will probably still run new games in 5-6 years but at much lower settings. That caveat aside, I think the build will do you alright for 5 years. I bought my i7 3770k in 2012 and it's still fine for most of what I need it for.
