Hi two questions i'm hoping someone can help me with as my grandson has me bamboozled!

My 4 year old PC is apparently "pants" according to my 10 year old grandson and he can't play his games properly when he visits.
1. I've heard that the newish AMD processors are now just as good if not even better than Intel but I can't afford the new stuff so what I want to know is this .. is there an AMD equivelant to say the i5 12400F-14400F that is of similar price but better for gaming at 1080p to run with a GTX 4060ti (or Radeon equivalent).
I've read so many conflicting reports over radeon V nvidia but I don't want to assume it doesn't matter at 1080 without asking.
2. Can someone also recommend a case that has quiet fans. (or some particular fans that I can get added that are quiet)
Thanks
Apologies if i'm asking noob questions that have been answered alsewhere.
(there may be more noob question in the next few days ;-p)

Is your existing PC a PC Specialist one? If so, can you post the full specs?

If not, unfortunately we wouldn't be able to help as this forum is for PC Specialist builds only. (Unless your grandson has talked you into buying a new one!)

No it's not but i'm asking before i buy a new pc from pcspecialist NOT to upgrade the one i have.

Ah, cool, thanks. I'm with you now.

Can you say what budget you have, what monitor you have (you say 1080p, but what refresh rate?) and what games/other uses you'll be using the PC for?

(Also I'm going to flag this for a mod to put it into a more appropriate forum.)

He plays fortnight and COD when hes here when its just me I play football manager and total war games. Other than that i just use it for email, reading the news and some internet shopping. Monitor is 165hz. Budget is around £1200 but can go slightly over.

This is about as high as i can get with my £1500 budget.

We love you Ukraine
You've reverted to a far inferior build, can you explain your choices?

If you weren't aware, Intel are now the bad processors that you run a mile from. What you've selected above is on a dead platform, whereas the AMD build previously selected is a lot more powerful and on a platform that will have support for another 2 years so you'd be able to upgrade the processor to lengthen lifetime and top tier performance.

crikey ... my choices are from a list of "minimums" from my grandson but i'm more inclined to listen to you guys on here than to a
12 year old so I guess i'll take another look at the previous one and tinker with that.

You haven't provided a config link, so I'll just put my comments below.
  • The 7700 is the newer, more efficient, cheaper version of the 7700X
  • Ideal RAM speed for AM5 would be 6000MHz (for about £20 more)
  • For upgradability you want an RM PSU as the unused cables can be removed to make cable management simpler (the CX cables are all permanently attached), and uses better quality components
  • For the price of the Prime B650 motherboard plus the additional wifi card, you may as well just go for the better quality TUF B650 WIFI motherboard (assuming you want/need wifi/bluetooth)
  • If you want ARGB on the case (and don't mind white) then the 4000X case will cost about the same as the 4000D+extra fans - and you get better fans than the PCS ones
  • We wouldn't recommend having a single SSD for everything as you have a single point of failure - but if you are insistent, then the P44 Pro is slightly more expensive but much faster

This is all really helpful but I'm 65 so not concerned about upgradeability as such lol. I know how to upgrade a RAM stick and even swap over a PSU but thats about it so im more concerned that it will last at least 3 or 4 years.

I got an error for that MoBo about the wifi? And as im sat next to the router anyway i will always be using ethernet so wifi isnt needed.

Regarding the fans I dont have a preference between RGB or ARGB really i'm just looking for a reasonably quiet casr and was told (by a 12 year old) that a cpl extra fans will help keep it quiet as ong as theyre not cheap nasty fans .... so I have no idea really just want decent fans that are quiet.

I have an external 1TB drive I use as well so i'm sure the one SSD will do.

Hope that all makes sense. Im not the most tec savvy and want to make sure i get it all okay before i buy.
My initial order was borked by DPD sp it has been returned without being delivered so im starting from scratch and asking all my n00b questons first. I really do appreciate the help and apologise if my questions are really dumb.

If you could follow the previously mentioned guide to upload the spec with the configurable link it'll go a long way to allowing us to help you more.

I would definitely agree with the comments prior though. For example, an external drive isn't going to be much use for installing games on... you want a dedicated drive for that. It doesn't add a lot to the cost but it's very much worth it.

If you post up the link we can go in and show you various configurations that we would recommend based on your needs/budget.

Are the Corsair extra case fans better than the pcs ones?
