hi,

just recieved my order from pcspecialist, and im having a bit of a problem with the display; the screen blacks out and the system can only be restarted by hard shutdown/reboot.

it has done this a total of 7 times since i recieved the laptop this morning, and only once has the error resulted in anything but my having to turn it off and on again. on this occasion it stated something to the effect of the graphics adaptor crashing (sorry i cant be more specific). all drivers seem up to date.

the relevant parts of the build are:
64bit windows 7 home premium
i7-720QM (1.6hgz)
8GB 1333mhz ddr3 RAM
1gb radeon hd 5650 PCI-e dx-11(i think this is where the problem lies)

any help or advice is appreciated on this.

Hmmm. Did you try closing the lid then opening it again? I know it sounds silly, but this has happened to me before and that worked lol.

heh, dont worry, im willing to give anything a go. unfortunately it didnt work. one thing ive noticed is that it only happens from the desktop, or when using windows explorer or a web browser (i.e. google chrome and IE)

when running full window programs such as Star Trek Online or Empire TW it doesnt have that effect. this is strange in the extreme to me.

it sounds to me like the machine is going into sleep and getting stuck.

Have you checked through the power managment settings to see how long its set to wait for?

mmhmm. when on mains power ive got it set so that it doesnt go to sleep at all. it literally does this when im on the desktop, or when im using browsers (im not sure if it would do this if left idle, i will check on that).

one thing i have noticed now is that immediately before it crashes i can see a box of small red green and blue dots surrounding the cursor, and my ability to interact with anything halts at this point too.

the temp's came in at 45, 42, 45 and 46 celsius, and were stable at these temp's for about 10 or so seconds before the point it crashed.

Just a quick one first, it's a simple one, but a handy one, can you try uninstalling the ATI drivers, reboot, then leave it again and see if the same thing happens. If it does not, then please install the ATI driver from your CD again and give it a whirl.

And if that does not work, give us a call!

ive just done that, the error returned aftrer reinstalling the drivers, but recovered this time. i take it this means the drivers are the trouble?

Most likely yes, the callcentre will be able to give you a link to the latest drivers for the laptop. Note they are different to the standard ones on the ATI website.

Im presuming its a laptop and ATI gpu here.

Can you also tell us what the bios version is. You can find this information on the first screen displayed when entering the bios.

Not familiar with that bios revision. Is this definately the laptop bios revision as shown in the bios on the first page at the bottom. It should be along the lines of F09.

This sounds like a graphics issue to me. As Jack said I would try re-installing the drivers or visiting the ATi website and downloading the latest set for your graphics card. If the problem continues to occur then please contact our call centre for further help.

I do believe for this particular laptop you can actually use the ATI drivers from the website, so, on that note, please try downloading the latest drivers from here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx

Go here, then go to 'Option 1 - Full Software Suite', give that a whirl, and if still having no joy, give us a shout on Monday and we'll have a look for you. Doesn't appear to be a hardware issue thus far so we should be able to rectify it for you.
