So I was playing my VR headset and in the middle of the game my laptop just switched off, no warning no nothing. Obviously VR puts the laptop under a lot of stress, but I did check with others and with this laptop and I have no problem running VR. I've also got a cooling pad and aircon in my room to try keep temps down.

Should I be worried? It has switched back on but after 5 minutes of being off.

You'd need to monitor your temps to make sure it's not overheating.

GPU seems too high, CPU is fine.

Is the GPU fan definitely activating? Have you set any custom fan profiles or installed anything like Afterburner or EVGA Precision?

I haven't, I've just been using the pre-installed program from Pcspeciliast. What ideal temp for GPU?

I'd say around 86c

I've been monitoring temps over the last few days. My CPU seems to be the main issue. I get temps of 90-100 during VR, but no when gaming normally (Witcher Wild Hunt and Heavy Rain) my temps are also 90-100... I'm assuming I'm screwed and should contact Pcspecialist?

How long have you had it?

It likely needs a repaste.

6 Months....

I just tried undervolting it by -0.135 and it is still throttling and the same temperature. I'm kind of scared of repasting as so many guides warn a wrong repaste will mess up my laptop.
It's very hard to go wrong with repasting, you just clean off what's currently on there with some isopropyl alcohol like this:


Using a cotton bud or even just a piece of kitchen paper.

Then you apply a pea sized amount to the center of the processor, and refit the heatsink. The heatsink screws are tightened just to finger tight, no need to overtighten. They're numbered also so you tighten them back up in that order.

It's very simple. It's something you'll have to do fairly often as well so best get used to it.


If it's a combined heatsink that covers the GPU as well, then you'll have to do the GPU at the same time. On the GPU add a bit more paste than on the CPU.

There's nothing that can go wrong if you add too much thermal paste, it's not conductive or anything so won't cause any shorts or anything like that.

If you apply too little and it doesn't quite cover the whole die then you'll know as temps will still be high.

If you need to get some thermal paste, I'd recommend thermal grizzly, it's not expensive and outperforms most others, you'll need a larger tube if you're doing both CPU and GPU:
