I am planning to buy a custom PC and I've been looking at the different prices between the Intel i7 8700k and the AMD Ryzen. I need a high perforamnce PC because I'm speedrunning games and making games in Unity. I also do video encoding from time to time so I need it to be fast paced. Should I go for an AMD CPU or an Intel CPU - they are both at the same clock speeds.

How badly do you need an RTX card for games development versus GTX? Are you actually going to use these features?

The RTX 2080 performs almost identically to the GTX 1080 ti in modern games. But at the current prices on PCS (and many other places too) it's almost £120 more expensive. The reason for this is that it supports features like real-time raytracing and DLSS. But currently no games support these features.

The question is not 'do you need a high end GPU' but 'do you need a card that supports these features for your dev work'? Because if the answer is no, a GTX 1080 ti will give you almost identical performance and save a huge sum of money that can better be reinvested elsewhere

Although for the uses you describe even a GTX 1080 ti might be wildly excessive, which is why I ask what monitor are you using for the playing of games?

At the moment I have a Dell Video Conferencing monitor that have really good sounding speakers. I only have one that I use. I think I might reduce to the GTX 1080. The newest game that I have on my system is New 'n' Tasty from 2015.

Oussebon is asking specifically about your monitor resolution. As in, if you're on a 1080p monitor then a 1080ti is a waste of money.

If you allow me one thought as a casual gamer and Unity developer:
My rig is almost identical to your selection. I have the 2600x and with 2x8Gb 3000Mhz ram and the fast SSD it does its job perfectly. I only have a GTX 1060 6GB card for 1080p, but even this card is so powerful that I do not think it is reasonable for small game development. However it all depends on how small/big are your games, but I think the vga selection is more relevant from gaming and not for game development (as long as you are not developing AA or AAA games). In other words: for game development, you will not see any benefit of buying high end vga as long as you do not use specific features of those cards.

So I'd suggest going with that, and possibly spending a little of what you save on the R7 CPU. e.g.

The 1080 is out of stock, I think. The pcs rep who posted about it didn't sound optimistic about getting new stock in anytime soon.

The GTX 1080 is indeed out of stock and we won't be able to source it in the foreseeable future. We should be getting a few more 1080Ti's in soon, but it's fairly safe to say that the production of Nvidia cards is now focused on the new cards and it's therefore rather difficult to get stock in for 1080/1080TIs.
