Hi all. My mate as got a Ryzen 3 4100 CPUI. he is wanting a upgrade with more cores and threads as he going to start streaming and doing other stuff. ( This is my Spec ) I was wondering if it worth upgrading to 5950x from a 3900x so i can give my mate my cpu. How much more performance would i gain from upgrading. Thanks

Your mate will have to post himself
My reading of this post is about whether @carlos726811's 3900X to 5950X would be worthwhile? What he does with the CPU afterwards is immaterial, surely? (@carlos726811, for clarity: we can only discuss PCSpecialist computers here.)

And the answer is that it depends what you use the computer for. If it's for video editing or some other heavily multithreaded task, you could expect something like a 60% improvement (assuming linear scaling). If it's for gaming, the 5950X is not a good choice and would be a relatively modest upgrade for you.

Agree with sck451, 5950X is not a gaming CPU, you should look at the 5900X or the new 5800X3D for that use case. Although the gains will dependent on what games you're running, resolution etc, as you're more likely to be GPU bound than CPU bound for many games I suspect.

Thank you. I play nearly all the latest games that's out or coming out. I have a 1440p monitor main and 2nd monitor which is 1080p..

As suggested, the 5950X wouldn't be the optimum choice for gaming. The 5800X would see very similar results for a lot less money. The 5900X was seen as the perfect spot for gaming with the 5000 series but you're not likely to see much of a difference over the 3900X.

What motherboard does your friend have? It's a very strange situation to get a CPU only to upgrade it within a month or so. Seems like a very poor choice on their part to begin with. Before upgrading the cooling will need to be considered and perhaps the PSU. I only mention this as there doesn't seem to have been much consideration of use up until this point.
