CPU Fan speed detection error message + high CPU temps(?)

Hi all,

Hope you are having a great weekend!

I have just received the build I ordered from PCSpecialist. I removed the internal foam, added the wifi antenna, plugged the power cable, and connected 2 monitors, a keyboard and a mouse.

As soon as I start it up, everything lights ups, fans start to spin and seems to work, however I get right into the following error message:

"CPU Fan speed detections error!" (full error message screenshot below)

I press F1 to get into Bios and the first thing I notice is that the FAN Profile has N/A all all options and CPU temperature shows as 79C. Was looking around and about 1-2 mins later, CPU temperature shows at 90C and PC shuts off on it's own after roughly another couple of mins while I was looking up the problem.

I have attached a picture I took of my screen (apologies for the bad quality pictures) and my specs further below.

Lastly, my CPU cooler LCD screen seems to show the below error, which persists after the PC has shut down (picture found online):

One final thing to note as it is not shown below; I had bought and requested from PCSpecialist to add/replace the case's existing fans with '4 x Corsair AF120 RGB ELITE PWM Fan + Controller Kit'. I I believe the controller kit is still in the box. Not sure if the liquid cooler CORSAIR iCUE H100i ELITE LCD Display RGB CPU Cooler has it's own 'controller' and/or whether this kit should have already been installed or if this is something I should do.

Just thought I would post here first before I contact them on Monday (if the issue persists). Thanks for your time in advance!

Check which header the cooler is plugged into

The coolers fans are controlled on their own, they don't need a controller, it's all built in.

From what I can tell, it's on CPU_FAN. I can see 1 cable connected to it (picture below). Do I need to open the other side to see properly where the cooler is connected?

Looking at the motherboard user guide:

CPU_FAN - I can see a cable connected to it
CPU_OPT - Nothing on it
CHA_FAN1 - Nothing on it
CHA_FAN2 - Nothing on it
CHA_FAN3 - Nothing on it
CHA_FAN4 - Nothing on it
AIO_PUMP - Nothing on it

That's where it should be connected to.

Check the power source connector for the cooler as well, make sure that's properly connected.

The power connectors; I think there's 2 of them. I think this one is where the GPU is connected(?), but the other one I can't see properly cause it's blocked. I will try to take another pic to see if I can see the connector.

Edit: ps. Is this parts what you were referring to as power source connectors?

So for your AIO, a tacho cable is connected to CPU_FAN to report a signal, because as you can see on booting, the BIOS is designed to check for a working CPU cooler, and if none is detected, display a warning. If the cable is correctly connected and fully inserted to CPU_FAN, then the fact it's not reporting a signal means that the Commander Core module that controls the AIO, might not be working correctly.

I'd open the side panel and make sure that cable from the AIO pump to the commander is fully inserted. Give it a firm push to make sure

I'd then check the cable connections from the Commander to 1) SATA Power and 2) USB header, again making sure they are fully inserted
1691359972994.png

If Commander is connected to SATA, it will have power, and in turn provide power to the pump to cool the CPU, even if the iCUE software is no running (e.g. it has a default/fallback operation mode).

I'm hoping the issue is as simple as the SATA Power cable being loose. Looks like the LCD screen is getting power (it's showing the red !) but the fans are not spinning, and since they get power from the commander too, I'd suspect the SATA.

Will give that a go. I also hope it's just a loose cable...

Just one quick comment, upon startup, all fans seem to work/spin. If you happened to be referring to my picture from my latest post, the computer is turned off, but the LCD error screen persists.

And thank you both for looking into my issue!

I don't think that AIO has a commander core? It should just be a USB header connected to the side of the pump head.

There will be a fan splitter though, to connect the AIO fans to the pump.

The connection to the CPU header appears normal but strangely it appears that the pump isn't doing its thing (given the CPU temps) so it does sound like a power issue.

Can you take a clear picture of the pump header with the connections coming off of it and then trace where they go?

No, the LCD version of the AIO does, I checked the manual: https://res.cloudinary.com/corsair-...er/productcontent/WW_Elite_LCD_Web_QSG_AB.pdf

I still have the same issue since my new PC, would love to know if you find the solution!

Hey, I had the exact same issue with my build too. The only difference for me is that one of my three fans continued to work, while the others and the AIO were all N/A in the BIOS screen. Worked amazingly for a week or two and then this weekend I plugged it in and the PC started flashing red. CPU climbed temps pretty quickly. The fans were initially all spinning, and although I had the red triangle warning on the LCD screen of the cooler before powering the PC up, it did briefly show water temps before changing to the red square fan message. I spoke with PC Specialists on the phone and they figured it was either a command core issue or a pump failure. We tried a couple of things like plugging the cooler back into the motherboard, trying to make sure all the plugs in the command core were seated well and the SATA wasn't damaged. I also tried tightening the screws around the LCD screen and pushing it in gently, to see if it is a connection issue, holding the cooler tubes while the PC was switched on to feel for heat/vibrations. We couldn't figure out if it was a command core issue or a pump one in the end.

Problem is the cables are a bit clumped up at the back, and because of the case design, it's really hard to see the command core without disconnecting other things to move the other wires and I don't have the confidence to try that. PC Specialist offered to take the PC back and do an RMA. Kinda sucks that I'm without a PC again for a while, but hoping they figure out the issue. There is a pin slot to do a hard reset of the command core, which might be worth a try if you know what you're doing with it.

Hi all,

Apologies for my late reply. Got extremely busy work-wise for the few days following my last response, and due to travelling and having very limited access to the internet, I haven't had a chance to check back here.

Short answer:

I was not able to identify the issue unfortunately, tried reseating every cable I could see and specified above, but the issue kept appearing. In the end I ended RMA'ing the PC after speaking with support the following day and making another attempt while on the call.

The PC has now been fixed according to PCSpecialist, but I have not received it yet as I have asked to postpone sending it back to me due to me not being able to receive it at the moment. After I receive it and had a few days to check it out, I will send another reply here. The issue seems to have been to the Cooler and Graphics card.

Longer answer:

Reading the RMA report, it specified that the fault had been isolated to the Cooler and Graphics card, and thus both have been replaced like for like. They cleaned out the system and re-seated all the core components along with installing the new Cooler and GPU, plus installed the latest up-to-date driver software.

And upon testing, the system temperatures no longer climb to high levels during normal use and it powers, post and boots into windows normally. PC also passed the overnight stress test done with no further faults replicated.

@Scott As per @B4zookaw 's response, the LCD seems to have a commander core. Luckily I did take additional pictures before sending it over the next day, so I have attached one below which shows the back side which includes the AiO commander core:

@Robbie As per above, unfortunately I was not able to find the exact issue myself, so I sent it back to PCSpecialist. They isolated the issue to the Cooler and GPU, and they replaced both of them.

@coffeestarsbooks I will say similar to your case, I have tried doing a few checks while on the phone with them, but was not as confident disconnecting some of the parts (ie. removing the GPU to gain better access to some of the motherboard locations located behind it). So basically I mostly just made sure the cables I could see and touch were seated properly. Unlike your case however, mine didn't seem to work when it arrived so was not sure where to start, especially since I could not even get to windows. Hope you got yours back now and works without any issues!

Edit: Added another comment on my response to coffeestarsbooks.

Appreciate the info, thanks! Hope your PC is now up and working!
