Hello,
i have bought a laptop last year and have been encountering problem for windows update. When I update, during the normal reboots that occur through the update, the laptop stops updating and tell me "removing modifications to the computer, completely stopping and removing any update. I'm stick at version 1909 while Windows is apparently at version 22H1! How do I remove this?

1909 support ended on May 11 2021 so it's not receiving updates anymore, it could be some nasty bug MS have written in, I don't know.

It may be worth downloading the update and create a bootable usb, then plug it in while you're inside windows and do the upgrade that way.

That will do an upgrade in place, you won't lose any data.

If that fails with the same error, then we'll need to look deeper into it.

What is the exact error message? If it is that it failed in the safe boot phase then the PC may require a BIOS update.
Have you tried resetting the update components?
Open cmd prompt/powershell with admin & enter:
Net Stop bits
Net Stop wuauserv
Net Stop appidsvc
Net Stop cryptsvc
Ren %Systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore DataStore.bak
Ren %Systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download Download.bak
Ren %Systemroot%\System32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
Del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat"
Net Start bits
Net Start wuauserv
Net Start appidsvc
Net Start cryptsvc
Restart the PC & try updating again.

And/or:
Search for services.msc & find Windows Update & ensure it is set to Automatic.

I would think the obvious thing to try first would be the Windows Update Troubleshooter. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional Troubleshooters > Windows Update Troubleshooter. Run that and see whether it helps.

Even though 1909 is out of support I would expect it to still update to 21H1. Since it doesn't I would beware of attempting to 'update-in-place' via a USB stick containing 21H1. Update-in-place ofetn causes nasty glitches on systems where everything is working well, on a system with a known issue I think update-in-pcae is a mistake. It would be far wiser to go straight for a clean install.
