Budget spec query with a little future proofing needed

Hi.

I’d greatly appreciate any thoughts or recommendations on the spec below. I’d like a spec which would allow me to continue using by GTX1080 for the time being for 1080p gaming but also give me the flexibility to upgrade GPU in the future to accommodate 1440p gaming on a 60fps 4k monitor. I intend to transfer over multiple SATA and SSD HD’s from my existing system so have opted for a larger case and power supply.

Thanks very much for your help and feel free to let me know if this is a wild plan.

It depends a little on what precise drives you're bringing over. What does "SATA and SSD HDs" mean? How many? What kind of SSDs? Are any of them M.2 drives?

Basically you've gone for an old platform there. It's decent (it's basically what I myself bought in late 2020) but it's old. You can get a way higher performing system for the same kind of money. For instance, you could get a build like the one below for £80 more that would perform better and last waaaaay longer.

Finally, you say "1440p gaming on a 60fps 4k monitor". This makes little sense to me. Why not just buy a 1440p monitor?! These days you generally want to run at a display's native resolution; when you do upscaling, it's done at a driver level with systems like DLSS...

Thanks for your reply and recommendations. Really helpful.

I currently operate with two SATA and two M2 drives but can potentially drop one M2 if needed.

I use my 60 fps 4K monitor for my Xbox Series X but suspect I am limited to a 1440p spec based on my budget.

You can put three M.2 drives onto that motherboard, so that'll be absolutely fine. I'd use that Solidigm one as the boot drive and the others for game storage etc.

That's unfortunate as it's not really a gaming monitor. You'd get a much better experience with 1440p. As it is, a 7800 XT will do an adequate job of 4K 60fps.
