Hi all,

Great forum. I have been reading across a few years and actively for past several weeks. I own an advertised PCS Vortex IV (I think) laptop since 2013 that is still going strong. Other than going through 3 hinges and a motherboard (when trying to fix the hinge) it's been superb.

I'm finding that the laptop (GTX 780m, i7-4750, 16gb 1533 ram, SSD & Seagate HD - some of those numbers might be made up!) is starting to minimally lag when working with bigger data sets and running lots of programs. It's more an annoyance than actually disruptive. I originally bought the laptop to play games but dont really game anymore. Really I'm interested in fast computation and I'd like to give my laptop to my nephew so he can learn to code / YouTube / play Fortnite.

In the past I've not really been interested in upgrading components. Normally run things until they dont work, but I'm getting more interested in the mechanics of computers and may tinker more going forward (e.g. swap to a new CPU, plug in some extra ram haha). I have been looking at the 3970 threadripper also, but I think that is really overkill.

Main questions about the spec below:

Better case choice?

Why does the configuration only allow 16gb of 3600 RAM?

How many years future proof is the Motherboard?

Configurator tries to save me money and downgrade the PSU, I like the idea of having something will last 7 years. Is that realistic/stupid?

Hi all,

Looking back on this - some overkill parts like PSU. I think I watched too many Linus Tech Tips videos and got carried away.

Question about the GPU - will prices for 2080ti drop a lot this week? Will PCS be supplying 3080 cards straight away or will take some time?

With the 3950x I would say the crosshair is worth it as just has much more robust vrm setup.

I wouldn’t buy now at all, I’d wait for todays NVidia announcement, the 3080 will be significantly cheaper than the 2080ti and substantially more powerful.
