Advice on build

Hi all,

The build is for AAA gaming with a view to upgrading GPU as and when required ( years I hope .. ), I've noticed reading the forums there's a lot more focus on PC-to-monitor compatibility with the monitor sometimes being unable to output what the PC can push through it.

Any assistance/advice/tweaks on the build appreciated and will the monitor 'work' with it? It's a 1080 build but quite a lot of the monitors seem out of stock at present from PCS so I've picked one pretty much at random based on the 27" screen, happy to modify or source elsewhere if PCS simply don't have an option available but refresh rates etc matter so what is a decent option around the 150-200 quid mark?

Also, is the Soundblaster worth the additional cost for gaming these days or is onboard good enough?

Many thanks

Hi there! Looks like a good start but there's a few adjustments we could make to this build. Firstly, what's your budget for the tower alone And whats the budget for all the peripherals (I see you have speakers and a keyboard in there too) Would you also be able to provide a spec link? (how to do this can be found here). For monitors, PCS doesn't have the best choice so I'd recommend going elsewhere. For 1080 you'd ideally be looking at 24 inches, the two monitors we tend to recommend for 1080p 144hz are the AOC 24G2U and MSI Optix G241, both can be found for about £180-200

Hi Junior,

Many thanks.

The tower - circa £1500, monitor and keyboard £300, speakers less important.

Crazy question, why not a 27" monitor, compatability?

Cheers!
Thanks for the info! This is what I’d go for

For case, I’ve swapped to the Corsair 4000D airflow, it’s a lovely case and has the potential for some serious airflow (hence the name ;) ) with some extra fans. For RAM, with gaming as the main use, the standard is 16GB, I’d only look at 32 if you plan to play MSFS or some heavily modded titles (I believe City skylines modded can be a RAM monster) for storage, I’ve had a jiggle so your Boot SSD is now a faster much faster M.2 500GB drive, then there’s a 1TB M.2 for games and I’ve kept the 2TB HDD. For PSU, you’re able to get a top of the line RMx 850W unit that will happily allow for upgrades, where as you might be backing yourself into a corner with a 550W unit. For cooling, the general consensus here is stock cooling or an AIO so I’ve been able to fit a 240mm AIO that will cool the 5600X nicely. I’ve also upped to the Silver warranty, it’s well worth the £5.

For peripherals, I’ve kept the keyboard and speakers you had in just for simplicity (I’d be interested on what you think About the PCS keyboard!). That leaves about £200 for a monitor of which both the ones I’ve suggested should fit in the budget.

When it comes to 24 vs 27 inch it’s all to do with image quality. When you’re at 1080p you may find the pixel density is a bit low for 27 inches which would provide a slightly blurry looking image where as for 24 inches, the image would look more sharp as the pixels need to cover less area. There’s nothing wrong with a 27 inch monitor, especially if you prefer a larger screen, but the image quality will just be a bit sacrificed because of it. I believe there’s a 27 inch version of the G241 called the G271 for about the same price if you’re interested.
