Adding second screen via USB-C - fails

Given the Win 11 Pro system below, I tried to add a second monitor (DELL) on a USB-C port using an HDMI to USB-C adapter.
The system does not recognise the second monitor.
The system has three USB-C ports - one on the top front and two on the rear panel.
I tried all three without success.
The Mobo has an HDMI and Display Port input. The main monitor is on the HDMI port.
I am sourcing a HDMI to DP adapter but in the meantime had hoped to use the USB input.
The adapter works fine on my Surface laptop with the DELL monitor.
Any reason it doesn't work?

You can't carry video over USB C in that way, only via the display ports on the motherboard which will be HDMI or DP.

You're likely getting confused with Thunderbolt which uses the USB C connector but is a different protocol?

What model screen is it?

The monitor is S2440Lb - like myself, it's very old!!
I little more investigation verifies that I am indeed mistaken as you suggest.
I now understand Thunderbolt and my confusion.
The DP adapter should sort it.
Many thanks for your help.
