1st Build

I am want to upgrade my desktop for home office. Key considerations for the computer are:
  • Using Microsoft Office Applications and other basic software
  • Listening to music via internet
  • Wi-Fi router coverage is poor
  • PC will be connected to two screens
  • I would like windows to start quickly (I understand it can be achieved by installing an OS on a SSD drive)
  • Broadband speed is up to 17mb
  • Working on number of different tabs at this same time

I have budget of up to £1,500 but feel for those basic requirements I feel I could get something to satisfy my requirements for much less.

Can somebody more experienced advice on build?

Regards,

Does the budget excludes any peripherals? just for basic home use? no gaming or cpu intensive tasks?

Also, what's your current system? Will help give an idea of what's a substantial upgrade and what isn't.

Current system is Windows 10.

No gaming or other CPU intensive tasks are envisaged, as I have other PC for those tasks.

Currently, I am using laptop to work from home, however, I find issues with starting up, takes time to load up, internet connectivity. Specifications of it are in the attachment.

From peripherals, I would like to include charger and speakers (up to 50-75 pounds). The PC will be connected via docking station, which is already in place.

You can edit the spec how you like.

I've not added Office as there are a range of Office options with different features and you'll either have your own copy/licence or want to select the appropriate one for your needs. Alternatively there is free and open source office software like Open Office.

  • Wi-Fi router coverage is poor
The solution to that won't be with the PC itself, but either to use range extenders, powerline adapters, reposition the router, replace the router, etc. The budget would be generously enough to get some powerline adapters aka homeplugs.

The PC will be connected via docking station, which is already in place.
I'd expect you'd just plug things into the PC rather have a docking station as well.

Thanks for assistance.

I have tried different solutions to increase WiFi coverage, and none solved the issue (Power Line, Range Extender). I tried to upgrade router, however, as found out it is not that easy with Sky. I am led to believe it is partially caused by the laptop, as WiFi coverage on my mobile is not that bad.

I am using docking station, as sometimes I connect work laptop when I am working from home.

Powerline adapters wouldn't improve wifi coverage, but replace it with being able to use wired networking further away from your router.
