I've always used a surge protector for gear like this, even with my home cinema kit. Peace of mind for a few bob that's a fraction of the cost of the gear being protected. It's a no brainer.
@ubuysa thanks for the info, much appreciated. Would you know why the fault occurs in the first place and is there a way to avoid It? Prevention is better than cure and all that.
Well chaps, I did a bit of Googling last night and I have now solved the problem.
Disconnected all the leads, power, USBs, display ports, etc. Pressed and held in the on/off button for 15 seconds, connected the power lead, switched on at the back and pressed the on/off button and hey presto...
Just tried to fire up my desktop and it’s dead as a dodo.
First thing I tried was to swap out the power lead, in case it was just a fuse, but still no joy.
Is there a standard fault finding process that I can try in such cases, before invoking the dreaded RMA?
Thanks in advance for any advice...
Which? has just thrown their hat in to the ring with a report on AV software packages.
Bitdefender, F-Secure and ESET are their best buys. Windows 10 Security (Defender) comes well down their list with
Pros: We found that Microsoft Windows 8 and 10 have strong built-in security and antivirus...
@ubuysa They have said that the replacement drive has been tightened down thoroughly.
I'm just wondering if its worth the extra couple of hundred quid to get a 4TB SSD and make the problem go away altogether?
Update from the RMA dept
"We have found where the ticking/knocking sound is coming from. We can confirm that it is the 4TB Hard drive. We have replaced the drive as a precaution but when the system is running high intense stress tests the ticking noise is still there as the hard drive is...
My desktop goes back for a second time tomorrow, for hopefully a permanent fix, but that's another story.
The point of this thread is that in the 3 week period between getting the first RMA number and the second RMA number, the number has increased by 670!
On the face of it, that's over 220...
Gave this a whirl. Didn't see anything :(
It gets collected on Monday, so hopefully PCS will spot the fault and get it corrected without too much delay
Hi @RogWal . Just did a check. No signs of any arcing or sparking. Just the usual knocking that I can feel through the side of the case and the bottom of the case
Yep, a fan was my first thought too, but like you say, frequency of the knock would be a lot more than it is.
Heaven only knows what it is. I just hope PCS find the cause and cure it
Well, it's on its second RMA to try and sort out this rhythmical knocking sound coming from below the internal case that covers the power unit and whatever else is under there. This is happening while I'm running Prime95
PCS had requested that I send them a vid of the fault, which I did
The...
A quick question for you knowledgeable chaps, and hopefully a quick answer.
In order to ensure I have the most up to date drivers and then download updates as necessary, is it easier to do this through Windows 10, or should I go to each manufacturer's website and check the latest there against...
It's a rhythmical knocking sound like an old steam train running slowly over railway tracks. I can feel it through the case that the power unit is under.
Hope that makes sense
@ubuysa and @SpyderTracks well, the good news is my system has been returned.
First thing I did was download Prime95 and HWiNFO64 again. Bad news is, I'm still getting that repeating knoocking sound (see video attached to initial post above) that I can feel coming through the case that...
