Very slow wireless internet compared to a laptop next to the PC

I have ordered a wireless adapter with the PC which works fine aside from the speed. A laptop bought a few years ago reports "Excellent" signal strength (and good speed). This PC reports "Poor" signal strength, sometimes disconnects altogether, and is very slow (~20kb/s!).

I don't know if it's just the adapter (Edimax 802.11n Wireless card) but I suppose it could be.
