Port Icon vanishes

So what, I hear you say ... No big thing if the port icon vanishes from the network connections section on my win7 installation...

Well it is

I have a piece of software I run on this very nice pcspecialist ordered laptop (thx for the service - works very well) that requires a logical port to authenicate against to work and if the port vanishes - the software does not work and my job does not get done.

I have looked EVERYWHERE to find a command that will allow the port to show as disconnected rather than vanish completely when the network cable is removed. I have traweled the Microsoft forums and specialist technical forums and haven't found how I can enable the icon.

Need your help ppl, thx

By default, this is what you should get:

Which disappears, or both?

Is it possible to bind the program to other connections?

Thx for replying so fast Gorman.
Yes, that is what I want but mine vanishes. The icon down the bottom doesn't disappear but changes into a wireless centric icon as I have wireless network ports in disconnected state (they DON'T vanish).

I could ask the software manufacturer to do a special for me and get it bound to the wireless port, but this should be so easy to do... you would think

so just to confirm, the lan nic icon needs to be in the notification area (bottom right taskbar near clock) and not showing the wirless icon or the lan nic icon disappears from Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections when the cable is unplugged and it needs to remain there.

not trying to be awkward!, just need to get it right.

I have been playing with this a lot, although every time i do it the icon in Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections remains, the notification icon turns into the wireless symbol.

I can find no way of making it only display the ethernet port without disabling the wireless.

Its very odd. Im stumped. I think it is working as intended as far as the notification icon goes, would be nice to be able to configure it though.
