This is a brief review of a new laptop (specs below). It was purchased as a desktop replacement device for computational neuroscience research (mainly multithreaded work with long run-times [e.g. 3 days], with the occasional GPU-intense task) and gaming workloads. Screen size (17 inch) and real-estate (QHD) were important, as was a good amount of RAM to support easy virtualisation (e.g. a 4-core, 32GB Linux Virtual Machine [VM] in the background + gaming in Windows 10). Portability and sufficient battery for 4-6 hours of disconnected use was also of value (but not critical).
One month in, the laptop is meeting expectations. I am able to run a heavy multicore workload in a VM while gaming. The ability to suspect the laptop (and running VM) and resume workloads without disruption is excellent; this is better for me than having two devices. The QHD resolution at 17" is perfect. The battery life supports 6 hours of work in "office mode" - which is fine. Helpfully, it is near-silent in office mode.
Downsides are that screen brightness is modest, so outdoor use on sunny days is challenged. Also, poor availability of AMD parts meant this is an Intel version. The only relative advantage of Intel here is the option to underclock to increase battery life.
Overall, I would recommend this to others with similar needs.
